Q: How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be an expert Personal Change Agent?
To answer your question, I am going to share with you a series of defining moments in my life which led me to the path that I am on today, coaching people like you who are seeking change and wanting to maximize their life’s potential.
These series of events started late in 1999 and carried through most of 2002. During this time frame my father was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and my husband very quickly changed jobs moving from the east coast to the west coast. My son and I stayed back east to be with my family as my father had been given about 6 months to live. The plan was for my son and I to move to California after my father passed away.
After a couple of months in California, the glamour of the new job wore off for my husband and he no longer liked the job that much. He longed to be back at home with his family and friends. His company transferred him to a job in the east coast office with a significant pay cut. In early 2001 he was back at home but miserable with the job. He worked all the time and had little time to be with our son. His focus was entirely on reaching monthly billable hours.
Shortly after, the company let go close to 200 people due to the events of September 11, 2001. My husband was one of those people. During the time that he was unemployed I found out I was pregnant, adding to the stress we were experiencing. I couldn’t work just one job and support the family on my income alone. We lived in a high cost of living area where typically both parents worked. The stress seemed to keep growing for our family.
The black cloud over my head just seemed to get larger and larger with every breath that I took in. Each day as I crawled out of bed, I would pray to just make it through the day. I numbly went through the motions required at work with days where I could barely function. On the way home from work, I would think about driving to the airport and hopping on the first plane out of town. All I wanted to do when I got home was hide under the covers.
I became stuck in this pattern of thinking that did not change. On many occasions, I found myself wishing for change, begging God or anyone who might be listening to “give me a new life!” This pattern of behavior, pattern of reacting without thought, pattern of not living kept on for a couple of years until I read a story in a local paper about a small child from the area who had been in a life altering accident.
A few weeks after reading the article I saw the child in her small red wheel chair in a local store. She did not look upset, angry, or sad. She had a beautiful smile on her face, was laughing, and seemed happy. She did not really seem fazed at all by the blow that she had been given –never being able to walk again.
I paid for my purchases and went out to my car and cried. I was so thankful that my children were healthy and safe. I was so lucky to have the life I had. I was also relieved that my kids were not with me because I was sobbing- probably the first time in years that I had allowed myself to cry.
I realized how incredibly blind and selfish I was being. If I kept begging for a new life, I might get one and it might not be the one that I wanted. (In no way shape or form am I saying that the child I saw asked for the change in her life that she was handed- this was just an eye opener for me.)
I realized that if I wanted a “new life” that I was the one who needed to create it. I could not sit around stuck in my own tracks waiting for a new life to be handed to me. I had to take action. I had to change. The power was mine. I needed to stop waiting. I needed to stop being a victim. I could build a better life. I just had to figure out what I wanted and how to get it.
At that very moment, I made a commitment to myself to start working on building the life that I really wanted. I read every personal development book I could get my hands on. I took every course and workshop that was available to me to find out what my strengths were, to tap in to those hidden resources, to build the life that I deserved to have. I also, in the process decided to become an expert on implementing personal change into people’s lives.
During this process, the light bulb turned on for me! The thing that I enjoyed MOST about my work was helping people realize their potential. As a worker in the mental health system, I had often worked with clients who had no personal hope and who had felt angry, resentful, and defeated. The majority of the people I worked with had a sour outlook on life, and it often made the work that I did with them seem difficult and unappreciated.
In retrospect, I suppose I would have the same outlook too if I was involved in a system that for years told me that my best hope was applying for disability benefits and that my hopes and dreams were no longer possible. But every so often, I was handed a gift- a client who was ready to change, willing to take a risk, willing to step out of the role of a “sick” person.
Helping these people through the change process moving from someone who was deemed “crazy” and who would “never amount to anything” to someone who had transformed their lives and was living their hopes and dreams was an incredible experience.
I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping people who have lost sight of themselves, to find themselves and to build the life of their dreams.
Q: Who do you work with?
I work with people just like you. People who are feeling stuck or lost in life. People who know there is more to life but haven’t been able to figure out what that more is. People who have goals but aren’t sure how to reach them. People who have tried to make change but have failed in the past. People who have entrepreneurial dreams but don't know how to bring them to life.
That being said I have worked with moms stuck under mounds of laundry in the relentless rut of dropping off, picking up, shuttling kids to and from, teachers no longer passionate about teaching, accountants who don't want to be stuck in offices, cubicles, high-rises, career counselors, consultants, therapists and nurses burned out by their work looking for new ways to put their skills to use- I can work with just about anyone. The only caveat is that the person really is invested in changing their lives for the better.
Q: How are you different from other coaches or counselors?
My professional training is in counseling. The basic philosophy was to be empathic, to reflect back, to be a little bit challenging, and to not be directive. In my coaching & mentoring, I offer a little more technical assistance and there is much more emphasis on present oriented activities and action steps to achieve outcomes.
Q: What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?
The Creating Powerful Change products and programs were created for people who are very seriously committed to making change in their lives. They are for people who have had their defining moments and know that change is needed. The products and programs require a great deal of personal commitment to get the most out of the change process. They are not for someone who is looking for a quick fix solution; half-heartedly thinking about changing some aspect of their life.
That being said, I am a high achieving go-getter. I prefer to work with people who also share those qualities. Now, at the time of seeking service someone who is stuck will most likely not be a “high-achiever.” They will most likely be floundering- which is okay if they are ready to start creating powerful change. Once they get going, they gain renewed energy and are again feeling more like the part of themselves that they lost at some point in time. As we work through action packed exercises and workshops, you will be expected to take serious and consistent action. No excuses allowed. We will take a look at everything that is getting in the way of your success and do some myth busting. We will be looking at a very different way of thinking around your past failures and your future success. You will get full support while you achieve this incredibly exciting goal: Creating the powerful life that you deserve.
Q: Who do your services and products not work for?
Please note that I am very selective in who I work with. I will not work with someone who is not ready to take responsibility for changing their life. I will gently turn those people away. It would not be fair for me to work with someone who is not ready to implement change, to work on removing blocks to success. If they are not ready then they will most likely not succeed. The Creating Powerful Change programs are NOT for those who are desperate, seeking a quick fix. It's been my experience that people in this frame of mind do not make the commitment or take the recommendations that I give them, and then turn around and blame others for their lack of perceived success. They do not do the work required to implement successful change.
I do not work with whiners or the chronic skeptics. If you are someone who consistently makes excuses for not finishing assignments, then this program is not for you either. Again, this program is for people who are ready to make change, ready to take action, ready to work hard at uncovering personal strengths and hidden talents. Implementing those things in to your life so that you can live the life you were born to live. So if you aren’t ready, I wouldn't want you to waste your time or money. That wouldn’t seem fair.
Q: How quickly can I expect to see results?
Obviously, this depends on how much you put into the assignments that I give you, and what your real commitment is to change your life for the better. That being said, virtually all clients begin to see some results within the first couple of months in the form of renewed energy and a sense of purpose in life.
